Free Virtual Events – Auntie Medusa and Me

To celebrate the imminent publication of Auntie Medusa and Me, I’m offering a limited number of free 25-minute virtual visits to schools.  Choose either:

  • Greco-Roman Myths in Auntie Medusa and Me
  • Saturnalia – the Ancient Roman Christmas and other fun festival facts!
  • Q and A session

You can book slots for the new term via the scheduler here. All I ask is children have some familiarity with the text (download the first chapter at the Chicken House website) and you consider using my books in the classroom.

Here’s the blurb:

Hiya! I’m Silvia, an ordinary kid just like you. At least, I was ordinary until I wound up in Ancient Rome as a demi goddess. Yeah, that took me by surprise too. But seriously, travelling back in time is nothing compared to what’s happening now: Medusa the gorgon wants her head back – and she’s chosen me to find it!

• Packed full of Roman and Ancient Greek mythology – as you’ve never seen it before!

• A laugh-out-loud funny family caper full of excitement and heart; perfect for fans of Loki, Horrible Histories and Who Let the Gods Out?

• Perfect for ages 8 and up; sure to be a hit with KS2 readers, as Romans and Greeks are a staple on the curriculum.

And while you don’t need to read My Family and Other Romans to enjoy Auntie Medusa and Me, it’s currently reduced on Amazon to just £5.49 so go grab yourself a bargain.

My Family and Other Romans Museum Trail

Did you know My Family and Other Romans now has its very own museum trail!

The trail can be found at the amazing Coronium Museum where it runs until 30th October 2024. Children can help Livi from My Family and Other Romans by taking part in a quest to find the translations for the Latin phrases from in the book, which have been hidden around the museum. Under-fives can take part in a trail to find the characters from the book. Complete the quest and claim your prize!

If you visit please do tag me in any photographs you take. I’d love to see the trail in action!

About Auntie Medusa and Me

An action-packed, laugh-out-loud funny Greek mythology adventure from the author of My Family and Other Romans!

Hiya! I’m Silvia, an ordinary kid just like you.

At least, I was ordinary until I wound up in Ancient Rome as a demi-goddess. Yeah, that took me by surprise too. But seriously, travelling back in time is nothing compared to what’s happening now: Medusa the gorgon wants her head back – and she’s chosen me to find it!

New Inspirations in the Classroom

I recently started a placement with the writing charity First Story which places professional writers in schools with the view to helping young people in underrepresented communities find their voice.

I’m working with Year 10s at Coop Academy Failsworth and, after just four weeks, can already see the confidence and creativity of these talented young writers growing. And I’m learning lots too. I’m focussing on creativity, as well as general writing skills, and this has forced me to reflect on my own creative practice.

Today we created portal stories, inspired by this glorious sweetshop I came across recently while on holiday in Palma. Just look at the glow from the window and tell me it isn’t magic!

We watched a video to help us imagine how the interior might look and sampled a variety of sweets to get our taste buds tingling…magic sweets that transported us to a fantastical world. A world we explored through drawing a map, bringing this all together to write a short story.

And yes, it was a right tasty adventure. I’m looking forward to seeing where our imaginations take us next.

FREE VIRTUAL AUTHOR VISITS

I’ve had some lovely feedback following my recent virtual visits, so I thought I’d add some extra dates. If you’d like to book a FREE visit for your school, please follow the link for further details. It’s an automated process – simply select your time and book online.

Most of my recent visits have focused on reading for pleasure or my Ancient Roman inspired book, My Family and Other Romans, but with the Olympics coming up, why not come and chat to me about my upside-down-fairytale, the acclaimed Princess BMX? You’ll find a range of supporting resources on my website too.
